Saturday: Emily and I went for a run in the afternoon. It was really hot outside! Emily, Maren, Jenny and I studied outside for a little too. When we were walking inside, Emily got stung by a bee! :( In the evening, we listened to and helped our Korean friends with their speeches for a speech contest later this week. Then we watched a movie. It was a nice relaxing day!
Today: I went to church and then met up with Emily, Maren, and Jenny at our favorite Kimbap restaurant. I ordered kimchi fried rice...yum! After lunch, Jenny, Emily and I studied outside again. Later in the afternoon I worked on lesson plans for my first speaking class...on Tuesday! I'm getting a little nervous! After dinner, Emily and I went for a short run. Another pretty relaxing day. We are all a little nervous for this coming week; we've basically had off of school for the past 3 weeks, so it is going to be very difficult to get back into the swing of things!!

Jeju Island Dream Trip!
Wednesday: We left Gimhae in rain and wind. We landed at Jeju and were greeted with the same. Our decent was SCARY! The crazy "stomach dropped from a roller coaster" feeling was a little bit too much to handle. No one got sick, but we were not only a little freaked out, but a lot of people felt dizzy and motion sick afterward.
At the airport, we were met by our tour guide and bus driver. Right away we were off to see some sights. By the time we arrived at our first location, Yongduam Rock, the rain had stopped. Yongduam Rock is an lava formation that looks like a dragon. Then, we went to Dokkebi Doro- "Mysterious Road". At this location, if you put your vehicle in neutral, it will roll UP a small hill! It was pretty crazy! At the top of the hill was our next destination, Loveland. Loveland is a sculpture park dedicated to all things love. It was an interesting experience. We had tuna kimbap as a snack after viewing the park. Luckily, we had a break in the weather and the sun came out! Then, we went to Han-ra Arboretum. It was very beautiful there. We went to a restaurant that served Jeju Island's famous black pork. (The pigs on Jeju are all black.) It was good, but very fatty and salty!
Thursday: The morning started out looking not so good, but as the day progressed, the sun came out, it warmed up and was quite humid. We went to Glass Castle first; this was a museum/park with all the exhibits made out of blown glass. It was pretty amazing. Then we stopped at O'Sulloc Tea Plantation. This is a huge, famous tea brand; all the tea is organically grown. In 2009, I went to Boseong, which is a city famous for tea farms, but this one was even bigger than the one I visited in Boseong! We only had few minutes and then we were off to Circus World to see some performances. It was interesting, but a little hard to watch; a lot of the gymnasts were young, (Chinese), skinny, girls and we were wondering about how well they were being taken care of and provided for.
After Circus World, we stopped at a buffet restaurant for lunch. Then we visited Camellia Hill, which was a flower park. It was also very beautiful here. Unfortunately, not many flowers were blooming, so it was very green! After Camellia Hill, we went Jet Boarding. This was probably my favorite experience of the trip! :) A jet boarding boat is basically like a giant 12 person jet ski. We sat in an open top speed 'boat' and the driver went really fast over the waves. It was really neat to see the coastline of Jeju from the OCEAN! We then went for a hike on a trail called "Allet- Gil". It was also very beautiful there. The views of the ocean and coastline were incredible. Many famous dramas and movies have been filmed around that location. We also went to see a waterfall called Cheonjiyeon Falls. Another beautiful sight. We toured around Saeyeon Bridge; a bridge designed like a sailboat. Unfortunately, at this point my camera battery died, so I had to have Emily take some pictures with her camera for me. After the bridge, we had some group members who wanted to go Go Karting, so we had to wait for them to do that. Dinner was at a restaurant known for two special kinds of fish found around Jeju...unfortunately I did not eat much!
Friday: We woke to sunshine, but it was much cooler during the day. First on the agenda was EcoLand. This was an ecological park, but it had a 'train' running all through the park; we rode on the train to view all of it. Towards the middle of the 'ride' we were inundated with a large group of "ajumas" (a very special 'breed' of Korean older women...known for their short curly permed hair, brightly colored clothing, need for pushing and shoving in crowds, and loud chatter). One of them had to sit in the train 'car' with Emily, Colin, Prof. Cho, and me. She sat down next to me and her friends in the car behind us teased her that she should have sat between Colin and Prof Cho...so with enough bantering, she was peer pressured into changing seats. THEN one of her friends climbed over the seat and came into our car so she could get her picture taken with him. It was really funny.
Our next item was horseback riding! I was so excited and had high hopes for this activity. I was severely let down. Here I was imagining at least 30 min to 1 hour of riding...maaaybe even along the beach or something...but...it was at a little farm. We were on the horse for maybe 10 minutes, if that. So sad. But, it was still fun to go for a ride anyway. There were also ATV's to rent and a few group members wanted to do that, so we waited for them to go on an ATV ride before moving on to a traditional village. The village was kind of interesting, however the whole thing seemed set up only to sell us their products at the end. The products were horse bone "pills" to help with "EVERYTHING" and a kind of tea jelly.
We had spicy black pork bulgogi for lunch. After lunch, we headed to U-Do ("do" means island in Korean). We had a 15 minute ferry ride to the island. Upon reaching the island, we got onto another tour bus and were taking to the bottom of a big grassy hill. We had time to walk up the steep hill and take pictures. There were, of course, many beautiful views. Then back on the bus...and we drove around the island some. We passed some very beautiful beaches...but didn't stop! We were surprised we didn't stop to see a lot of sights...finally we stopped at a beach facing Jeju. It was also beautiful, but not as beautiful as the other places, I don't think. The water was an amazing shade of blue and the sand was made up of tiny shells. I even found a few pieces of beach glass there! We got back on the bus to get a ferry back to Jeju. We then traveled to one last location; I don't recall the name of the final place, but it was another beautiful view of the ocean with all of the lava rocks jutting out and tide pools to look at. There was only a little bit of time here, before we stopped at a Jeju Tourist Shopping Market and then finally to the airport. We had a short flight back to Gimhae, a taxi ride to Inje (when we were at a stop light we had some guy get out of his car and smack our taxi! Our taxi driver told us that was his friend, but we weren't so sure...) and finally I was back in my dorm!

One Day til Jeju!
Sunday: I went to 신아산 "Shina Mountain" with my host family. It was Parent's Day, so I gave them a basket of flowers. We went hiking in the mountain-it was really pretty. We stopped for snacks twice and then made it to the top. It is 630 meters high! After we made it to the top, we had a picnic lunch of kimbap, and "kimchi kimbap" (which was rice and vegetables rolled in a white radish kimchi), fruit and nuts. We made our descent and stopped at two Buddhist temples on the way. We went for cold noodle soup when we were all finished; I'm still not sure how I feel about that soup. It is strange to have shaved ice with noodles...
My friends returned from their templestay and we traded stories and events from our time apart.
Monday: I didn't have anything til 3:00! Our cooking class was canceled so we could switch and have music class instead. We practiced our songs several times with Director Kim. After dinner, we decided to go for a Baskin Robin's run! Emily, Songhee (Emily's roommate), Maren, Narae (Maren's roommate), Jenny and I went and had a nice girls ice cream date. :)
Emily and I went for a short run on campus even though it was rainy. After our run, we had movie night in my room.
Today: Buddha's Birthday = no class! :) Happy Birthday Buddha! Maren, Emily, Jenny and I went to Issac's for lunch...it had been way too long since I last had Issac's Toast! We sat outside and ate. Sungmin picked us up and we also got Tim to go to see a movie! This time we went to see an American film (it had Korean subtitles); we saw "Source Code". It was actually pretty good-at least I enjoyed it. Emily and I shared a cheese popcorn and iced tea combo again.
This evening, I'm packing and preparing for our adventure to Jeju Island. Unfortunately, the weather does not look too promising. It will be in the low 60's and rainy/windy for the three days we are there. However, I am still looking forward to visiting this island! :) I'm sure there will be lots to share when I return! :)

Glad to be back Saturday
Back at Inje after a night away...it's always nice to come 'home'.
Friday:
A little bit more about the job...on Tuesday JiWon asked if I would be willing to take this position for a month and I said yes right away. We planned to meet sometime on Friday to discuss the details and work out a schedule. In the morning, I first had to meet with a member from my ET group, Hans, to discuss our "Membership Training" trip later that afternoon. Hans was nice enough to go and grab JiWon for me; we discussed the job a little more and he called his class senior, the guy in charge of the job and he wanted to meet with me right away in the afternoon. We went for lunch and talked a little and then decided to meet with the students. I will be teaching a one hour long class four times a week. I'm kind of sad we didn't start this sooner; a month doesn't seem like a very long time! We will focus on conversation and speaking skills.
After meeting with the students, I returned to ET for a few hours before having to head out to Jiri Mountain. We stopped at HomePlus and bought a lot of meat, snacks and drinks. Then we were off! Unfortunately the weather was rainy, but it didn't dampen our spirits too much. We finally arrived and settled in and started cooking. We stayed in a traditional house that has underground heating (ondol)-the floors got very warm by late evening (we slept on the floor)! It was fun sitting around a campfire/grill eating and talking with my Korean friends. They did not use very much English, but I tried my best to listen and pick up as much Korean as I could.
Today: We had ramen for breakfast and then we were off to a temple on/near Jiri Mountain. It was really beautiful. We had mandu and ate them by a really clear stream. We went into the temple and then headed back to Inje. We stopped at Yonji Park for a little and finally returned to campus. I went for a nice long run, cleaned up and had dinner with some friends on campus. Tim, Ben, and I went for ice cream and I bought flowers for my Host Family for tomorrow-it's Parent's Day. Tonight Tim, Ben and I are going to watch a movie. It's crazy because all of the other IIIHR members are in Gyeongju doing a TempleStay and most of the Inje students are at home for Parent's Day...it's very quiet here! We didn't end up watching the whole movie because we were so tired. When I was going up the stairs to my room I heard Ben yelling, "Amy! Amy! Come quick!" So I went back down and found Ben with a HUGE centipede or millipede. We grabbed Curious Bob to help us take care of it...but first we decided to put it in a box to show Tim and scared him. Bob later swept the "monster" down the stairs and the doorman stomped on it. :(

Catching Up
Wednesday: Kindergarten was canceled today, so it was nice to have a little bit more time to get ready in the morning. In our conversation class, we practiced our speeches that we have to give to the president and founder of Inje University in a few weeks. Then, Jihye invited a former IIIHR participant to come and talk with us because she married an Inje student and now lives in Korea. In our movie class, we watched "Joint Security Area (JSA)". It was another movie about the Korean border, but I really liked it (even though it was also sad). We also had birthday cake for Yangyang's birthday during class. In the evening we went to the Makgoli place to celebrate her birthday.
Thursday: No class today!! It was Children's Day, which is a National Holiday in Korea! :) Jenny wanted to show us a famous Mandu restaurant in Pusan, so Tim, Maren, Em, and I went to Pusan with her for the day. The Mandu soup was sooo good!! After we ate, we went to a Yongdusan Park that has the "Pusan Tower". There were a lot of activities and things going on in the park for Children's Day, so we walked around and looked at everything. Then we went to Gwangwali Beach. Afterward, we went to Tom and Tom's for....Honey Butter Toast!! :) We grabbed a quick dinner (I had kimchi fried rice) and headed back to Inje for another birthday party. At night, I had a girls night with Maren, Emily and Jenny. :)

Terribly Long Tuesday
Yesterday: I was able to talk to my Mom after almost 2 weeks! I was also able to talk to my "언니" (unni= big sister) Erin back in Wisconsin. :) The weather was so gorgeous!! I sat outside to do some studying. My friend 정관 came to help me with some Korean. Then, off to cooking class. Today we made "김치 만두국" (kimchi mandu guk= kimchi dumpling soup). We made the dough, the filling, AND the broth (made from little fish stock!) from scratch!! It was a long process. Our teacher said that there is kind of a myth/joke that how well your dumplings look determines or means how beautiful your children will be!
After cooking class, Emily and I went for a quick run on campus. We headed to dinner and had our three judges determine this week's winner...me! Emily, Ben, Jenny, and I had a taste for ice cream...so we went to Lotteria (Korean McDonald's) and got cones there. Later in the evening, we went out for Ki Chul's birthday. We also went to 노래방 (noraebang= karaoke). It was a lot of fun!

The Weekend
Saturday: Emily and I had lunch on campus and then did some shopping for Jenny's birthday. We also looked at birthday cakes for her. We went for a run in the afternoon. In the evening, we went to a club event in Pusan. One of our dorm managers helped organize the event and he wanted us to come and support him.
Today: I worked on some homework in the morning and then went to church. After church I met up with 정관 (Jeong Kwan) to go to a Korean wedding. 정관 didn't know where the wedding was...so we took a few different buses and ended up taking a taxi to the place and being about 10 minutes late. A Korean wedding is so different from the weddings back home. This particular one took place in a large room, but the back part was just kind of a foyer and people attending the wedding were just standing around and talking while the 'ceremony' was taking place. It also was very quick; we were 10 minutes late and we only saw about 10 minutes and then it was over! Then the bride and groom change into traditional Korean clothes and take some traditional pictures. We were given coupons to a buffet so we went to eat-there was so much food!! 정관 said that we were supposed to be able to congratulate the couple, but we did not see them in the buffet restaurant.
In the evening, we went out to a BBQ place for Jenny's birthday dinner. Afterward, we had a cake from Tous Les Jours on campus. It was yummy! :)
